Renewal of the Wall Art on the North Side of
the Dōgo Onsen Honkan

In the summer of 2020, at Dōgo Onsen in Matsuyama, Ehime, the Dōgo Reborn Project will evolve.
Starting from August 7th, 2020, the Special Projection Mapping Program on the Dōgo Onsen Honkan "FIREWORKS BY NAKED - The Phoenix 2020" (Created and directed by NAKED) will start for a limited time only. There will be Digital Fireworks and the Blue Phoenix decorating the building. "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix" is considered the lifework of Osamu Tezuka and the Phoenix symbolizes eternal life in the original. The Blue Phoenix is a new appearance that represents good health, healing, prayers for recovery, cheer for all of us who are living in tough times, and appreciation for frontline healthcare workers.

In addition to this, the wall art decorating the temporary fence for the construction on the north side of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan has been renewed. The theme is "The Timeless Message." Drawings and photos from the five different periods - the mythical age, Asuka, Edo, Meiji, and Showa - featured in the original animation "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" will be placed side-by-side with a graphic art of the Phoenix and Tezuka Productions' newly drawn manga. With the famous lines from "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix," this wall art will send us who live in the present messages that transcend time. It's a story that "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix" and the Dōgo Onsen Honkan will tell for a limited time only.

Asuka Era

Message Panel/Asuka Era

These are the messages from the mythical age and the Asuka era that were featured in the original animation "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" Prologue - Episode 1. These pieces are newly drawn by Tezuka Production for this wall art.

The mythical age panel has Ōkuninushi and Sukunahikona, the main characters of the original animation, in it. The message is from Osamu Tezuka's column titled "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix - Life and Death by Osamu Tezuka," published in the February, 1967 issue of the magazine COM. The early works of "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix" were serialized in this magazine.

The Asuka era panel has Prince Umayado (Later known as Prince Shōtoku) in it. The message is from an unforgettable scene in the original manga "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Karma," where the popular character Gao finds the new way of life seeing vast expanses of nature.

Edo Era

Meiji Era

Message Panel/Meiji Era

The Edo era panel features the Phoenix and the egret, which is the symbol of Dōgo Onsen, flying in the sky. The original artwork seen in the background was painted in the latter half of the Edo era and is in the collection of the Shiki Museum in Matsuyama City.
The message is taken from the emotional last scene of "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Sun," which is the very last volume of manga in existence.

On the Meiji era piece, we replicated the Honkan after the renovation in year 27 of the Meiji era by artificially coloring documents; in particular, a black-and-white photo taken around year 30 of the Meiji era. This important photo was taken around the time they started building Yūshinden, the bathing room exclusively for the Imperial Family that was complete in year 32 of the Meiji era.The message is taken from the narration in the beginning of "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Resurrection." It implies that today's Dōgo Onsen Honkan building originated in this period.

Next is the Showa era. This is year 38 of the Showa era, a year before the Tokyo Olympics. You can see the west side of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan finally looking exactly like what we see now, after numerous renovations, and there is the Phoenix.
The message is taken from a line in the climax of "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dawn."

There are also panels introducing the characters from the original animation "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" Prologue - Episode 1 and Episode 2. In addition, there is general information of the Dōgo Reborn Project's on-going projection mapping and guidance of social distancing to stop COVID-19 spreading.

Main Panel - the Blue Phoenix

The main panel features the Blue Phoenix, representing prayers for recovery, healing, and appreciation for frontline health care workers. Its concept is the Phoenix, which often appears in front of people when times are changing, transcending time and space to tell the people today what so many people who took care of Dōgo Onsen for future generations to enjoy were thinking.
The message is taken from the original animation "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" Episode 3 "And to the Future", which will be released by the end of 2020.The wall art, the animation, and the projection mapping will create a new story for Dōgo Onsen together.

"Hi no Tori, the Phoenix" that is considered the lifework of Osamu Tezuka and the original animation "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" will tell you messages that are only here right now. Please enjoy yourself.
