The second projection mapping on the Dōgo Onsen Honkan by NAKED portrays the world of the original animation - "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" Episode 2 "Shiki and Sōseki" in digital art.
The feel-good emotional story of Episode 2 "Shiki and Sōseki" is inspired by the true events featuring Yukiya Isaniwa, the first mayor of Dōgo Yunomachi who carried out the renovation of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan in year 27 of the Meiji era; Matahachirō Sakamoto, the master carpenter; Shiki Masaoka, the poet of Matsuyama, and his good friend Sōseki Natsume who came to Dōgo Onsen in year 28 of the Meiji era, the year after its reconstruction was complete. In line with the story of the animation, the second projection mapping uses the Dōgo Onsen Honkan's shoji on its second and third floor as a screen and shows the fantastical world. The updated version of the popular scene from the first projection mapping where the Phoenix gives energy to the Dōgo Onsen Honkan with onomatopoeia (a rhetorical technique in manga) "Dooogoooooon" is included.
Another highlight is the Botchan Train which appears in the last half. Iyo Railway's Botchan Train is modeled after a steam locomotive which is famous because the main character in Sōseki Natsume's novel "Botchan" rides it. It was restored in 2001 and carries many visitors as it runs from the center of Matsuyama to Dōgo Onsen. The computer-generated image of the train cars fills the entire screen carrying a message from the Meiji era to the present day and then for the future. It then takes off into the starry sky.
Just like the animation, the silhouette of Shiki and Sōseki relaxing in Botchan's Room will emerge at the end so don't miss it. You can enjoy the story numerous times through the animation and the projection mapping. Please come to the north side of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan and enjoy yourself.
The Dōgo Onsen Honkan is currently under repairs to preserve the building. While repairs are being done, it's still open and you can enjoy 100 % natural hot water of Dōgo Onsen
Dōgo Onsen, the famous hot spring with 3,000 years of history
The stone bathing rooms adorned with Tobe porcelain panel paintings and the baths with their large column-shaped water spouts called yugama are representative of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan's unique appeal.
